Spring Cleaning Your Saw: Power Washing vs. Steam Clean (Steam Jenny)

Cleaning Your Saw

Service Tech, Jeremy Keba

Power Washing Pros and Cons

  •      • Readily available for rental, usually at local hardware store
  •      • More focused cleaning power at pressure tip
  •      • High water usage
  •      • Clean-up takes longer from excessive water use
  •      • Only uses cold water

“Steam Jenny” Pros and Cons

  •      • Equipment not readily available for rental
  •      • Training needed for correct use of gun
  •      • Water use is much less than power washer
  •      • Uses steam to clean, so there is little residual water to clean-up
  •      • Less chance of water intrusion on certain parts of machine

Tips for steaming or power-washing equipment

Pre-clean machine by removing chips, remove coolants and clean out coolant sump pits prior to cleaning. Pre-treat machine with diluted commercial degreaser. Be mindful, too strong of a mix can remove the paint on machine. Brush heavily soiled areas prior to cleaning with pressurized water or steam.

Cover any electrical boxes, motors, and control surfaces. Never spray water directly at any electrical component panels. Be aware of washing limit switches, sensors, encoders, etc.

Use compressed air to dry off machine of any standing water. Make sure to coat wear surfaces and moving parts with light oil or a WD40 type of lubricant to prevent rusting.

Be sure to isolate any, and all electrical and other utilities to the machine prior to washing, follow company LOTO procedures.

Who's The Boss?

By: Mike Mackert

Some people interact directly with customers but many of us operate indirectly of the customer. How we conduct business is very important in the development of relationships. Thanks to the leaders at Compco, a family business that has operated since 1928, for sharing this reminder of why we are in business. This is written on the conference wall of Compco Industries in Columbiana, Ohio...

Who's The Boss?

There’s only one boss, and whether a person shines shoes for a living or heads up the largest corporation in the world, the boss remains the same. IT’S THE CUSTOMER! They are the people who pay everyone’s salary and who decides whether a business is going to succeed or fail. And they don’t care if a business has been around for a hundred years. The minute it starts treating them badly, they’ll put you out of business.

The boss, the customer, has bought and will buy everything you have or will have. They bought all of your clothes, your home, your car, your children’s education and your vacation. They pay all of your bills, and they pay them in exact proportion to the way you treat them.

The person who works deep inside a big plant on an assembly line might think they’re working for the company that writes his paycheck, but they are not. They’re working for a person who buys the product at the end of the line, the customer. In fact, this customer can fire everyone in the company from the president on down. And they can do it by simply spending his money someplace else. This is one of the reasons why taking pride in the work we do is so important to us personally. Doing an exceptionally good job will not only bring joy and satisfaction, it will get more customers, keep the ones you’ve got, and insure that you continue to get a paycheck from your bosses.

Some of the largest companies that had flourishing business a few years ago are no longer in existence. They couldn’t -or- didn’t satisfy each customer. They forgot who the boss really was!
